Modern pizza came about around the 19th century, with credit of the invention going to Raffaele Esposito. Since its rise in popularity, pizza has gained many variants. New York style pizza is a hand tossed, thin crust style traditionally topped with Mozzarella cheese and tomato sauce. It is said that the New York tap water used to make the dough gives the pizza a unique texture and flavor.
Lombardi's was the first pizzeria in the United States, opening in New York Cities Little Italy in 1905. Pizza quickly gained popularity with the poor population, as it was cheap and filling. By 2010, over 400 pizzerias are open across New York City.
