Class Rank

The aim of class rank is to provide a mathematical summary of a student’s academic record compared to other students in the class.  The Williamsport Area School District adjusted the class ranking formula in the Spring of 2023 due to the complexity of the previous calculation used.

The basis of the revision is due to adjustments made to the high school course catalog over the last two decades which includes the weight and difficulty factor of courses.  Class rank will take into consideration the degree of difficulty of courses in a student’s schedule and the grade earned in the courses.

The revised class rank formula will be applied during the 2023-2024 school year for all students in grades 9-12.  The revised formula is more commonly used across school systems both locally and regionally.

WAHS Class Rank Formula as of 2023-2024:

Rank Points = [Σ(course grade)(difficulty factor)(course credit)]/credits
