Driven by interest, fueled by passion

From early on, students are presented with many activities to help them find what they like, experience what they excel at, and offer them opportunities to be challenged:

Finding that career path takes time.

Williamsport Area School District introduces children to many different types of careers as early as their primary school years, allowing them to find what speaks to them, and customize their educational path as they approach graduation and move forward to post-secondary education or skills training.

Introducing students to career options

Beginning in primary schools, students get first hand accounts of different jobs from visiting professionals. As they prepare to enter high school, students will visit several local businesses that will give them a more holistic look at how many different types of jobs work together in various settings. Some of our introductory career programs include:

  • Career Café
  • School Counts
  • 8th Grade Business Tours

Career immersion and support

At the high school level, students are fully engaged in pursuing career paths and are provided with educational resources to help them achieve their goals. Our Career & Technical Education program gives students real-world learning opportunities that puts their knowledge into practice, giving them a feel for what they can expect in the job field. WASD participates in Pennsylvania College of Technology’s Penn College NOW program which allows students to earn free college credits that will  be transferred to Penn College upon enrollment, shortening their time in school, and reducing costs.

Odyssey of the Mind

Odyssey of the Mind is an international educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college. Kids apply their creativity to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics. They then bring their solutions to competition on the local, state, and world level. Thousands of teams from throughout the U.S. and from about 25 other countries participate in the program.

Odyssey of the Mind is not a college bowl or a competition about knowledge. It's all about creativity, an often overlooked element in the growth and development of many students. Kids are rewarded more for how they apply their knowledge, skills and talents, and not for coming up with the right answer. In fact, in Odyssey of the Mind problems, there isn't one right answer. Ever.

Students work in teams to learn cooperation and respect for the ideas of others. They evaluate ideas and make decisions on their own, gaining greater self-confidence and increased self-esteem along the way. They work within a budget, so they learn to manage their money. They see that there’s often more than one way to solve a problem, and that sometimes the process is more important than the end result.

Williamsport Area School District has a very proud tradition of all our schools participating at various levels of competition with our students going as far as Odyssey of the Mind World Finals for several years.
