From the stage to the studio, our Visual and Performing Arts programs inspire Millionaires to explore, create, perform, and share their talents with our community.
Visual Arts
At Williamsport Area School District, the Visual Arts Department inspires students to explore creativity, develop artistic skills, and discover the power of visual expression. From self expression and creative communication to commercial art applications, students have opportunities to engage in the visual arts from elementary school through high school, with a dedicated K–8 curriculum.
At the high school level, students can explore additional art courses through three discipline focused tracks:
- Two Dimensional Art: Drawing, painting and printmaking
- Three Dimensional Art: Clay, sculpture and jewelry
- Photography & Digital Media
Across each discipline, students develop artistic literacy by creating, presenting, responding to and connecting with visual works of art. Whether students pursue art as a form of expression or want to develop and refine their artistic skills, there are opportunities for every level of interest.
Art as a Career
Through the district’s Career & Technical Education program, students can pursue Commercial Art as a career pathway. This hands on program provides students with practical experience and instruction as they prepare for further education and careers in graphic design and related fields.
Celebrating Young Artists
WASD students have opportunities to participate in the National Art Honor Society, which provides scholarship opportunities, national recognition and connections with other young artists.
Students also regularly participate in local, regional and national art competitions, giving them opportunities to showcase their work and, in some cases, have their creations displayed or purchased.
A Tradition of Excellence
For the sixth consecutive year, Williamsport Area School District has been named an Outstanding
Visual Arts Community by the Pennsylvania Art Education Association (PAEA), recognizing WASD’s continued commitment to excellence in visual arts education.
Performing Arts: Drama & Theatre
For many students at Williamsport Area School District, the performing arts are more than an activity. They are a place to find their voice, build confidence, make connections, and shine.
At Williamsport Area High School, the Drama Club gives students opportunities to explore classic performance techniques, including pantomime, improvisation, dance and script work. These skills come to life through productions of plays and musicals throughout the school year. Students in the district’s younger grades may also have opportunities to participate in productions as time and interest allow.
Music plays an important role on the stage as well. Students put their musical talents to work by performing in musicals, singing in productions and accompanying performers as members of the orchestra pit.
WASD students also have the opportunity to participate in the Ray of Light Awards, a school level awards program sponsored by the Community Theatre League that recognizes excellence in the performing arts among area schools. Williamsport Area High School is proud to participate in this annual celebration and has earned numerous awards.
The opportunities to perform extend beyond the classroom. Students who discover a love for the stage can continue developing their talents through age appropriate productions at the Community Theatre League of Williamsport.
Our community is also home to the Community Arts Center, which welcomes national touring shows, performers and cultural events throughout the year. These opportunities allow students, families and the greater community to experience and celebrate the performing arts right here in Williamsport.
Performing Arts: Music Education
Students also have opportunities to share their talents beyond the classroom. Specialized groups such as the Strolling Strings, Marching Millionaires, orchestras and vocal ensembles regularly perform at community events and have even had the opportunity to perform at the White House.
Behind these opportunities is a dedicated team of music educators who help students develop technique, confidence and an appreciation for a wide variety of musical styles. The district’s continued investment in music education has helped make WASD a Best Community for Music Education for 24
