Williamsport, PA (April 29, 2026) — The Williamsport Area School District (WASD) has once again been honored as one of the Best Communities for Music Education by the NAMM Foundation, marking an extraordinary 24 consecutive years of recognition. This distinction underscores the district’s commitment to ensuring all students have access to high-quality music education.

WASD remains one of the longest-running recipients of this award in the state, a testament to its enduring investment in the arts and its belief in the vital role music plays in a well-rounded education.
The Best Communities for Music Education designation is awarded to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement in providing music access and instruction to all students. Applicants undergo a rigorous evaluation process, submitting detailed information on funding, graduation requirements, student participation in music courses, instructional time, facilities, community engagement, and overall program support. To uphold the program’s rigor and credibility, all applications were independently reviewed and verified by WolfBrown, a leading research and evaluation firm specializing in education and the arts.

“This honor reflects the district’s enduring priority to make high-quality music education accessible to every student,” said Superintendent Dr. Timothy S. Bowers. “Earning this recognition for 24 consecutive years speaks volumes about the commitment of our educators, the enthusiasm of our students, and the strong support from our community.”

Students across the district continue to benefit from a vibrant and engaging music program.

“My time in the music department at WAHS has helped me grow in so many ways,” said Iris Cresko, a junior at Williamsport Area High School. “Not only has my confidence while playing the violin increased, but I have also developed a greater love for music, which has given me a deep appreciation for my time spent performing in Orchestra."

“The best part about being in the music is just the fact that we get to work with teachers who care so much about giving music to the students,” said Xavier Johnson, a senior at Williamsport Area High School. “The music department in WASD has not only helped me improve and hone my musicianship but also gave me a sense of community in such a professional environment.”

“Music education is essential to developing the whole child,” said Matthew Radspinner, Director of Orchestra/Strolling Strings. “It provides students with opportunities to grow creatively, academically, and socially as part of a well-rounded education. We are deeply grateful for the continued support of our district and community, which allows us to ensure every student has access to meaningful music experiences that support their overall growth and lifelong success.”

Gianna Brockway, a senior at WAHS, added, “Being involved in Orchestra and the Marching Millionaires has allowed me to make so many meaningful memories that will truly last a lifetime.”
