WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (July 8, 2026) — The Williamsport Area School District Board of Directors approved two leadership appointments during recent board meetings, positioning experienced educators to lead two of the district's intermediate schools for the 2026-2027 school year.
At the June Board meeting, Jacob Anderson was approved as principal of Andrew G. Curtin Intermediate School. Anderson succeeds David Michaels, who was approved at the April Board meeting to serve as principal of Lycoming Valley Intermediate School.
Anderson earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Lock Haven University, majoring in Middle Level Education with a concentration in mathematics and certification in special education. He later received his master’s degree in educational administration and Principal Certification from Point Park University.
Following his education, Anderson began his career with the Williamsport Area School District as an eighth-grade math teacher. When asked what inspired him to pursue a career in education, he reflected on the influence of several teachers throughout his life.
"Growing up, I had many great teachers that I looked up to," said Anderson. "Being in high school and having that inspiration, I decided education was a great fit for me."
Anderson excelled in the classroom and was promoted to Dean of Students at Williamsport Area High School in January 2024. He described his time on the Hilltop as "fast-paced and full of learning opportunities."
In June 2024, Anderson began serving as assistant principal at Curtin Intermediate. Now, two years later, he will begin the 2026-2027 school year as the school's principal.
Anderson shared that he is "excited to continue the groundwork that David Michaels has established and to continue serving students, families, and staff as we work toward the goal of growing excellent citizens within the Williamsport community."
Superintendent Dr. Timothy Bowers shared his enthusiasm for Anderson's next chapter.
"Jacob has already done so much in a short amount of time for the district, and we are eager to continue to see his growth in this new role," said Bowers. "He brings a strong work ethic, a love for learning, and a passion for helping our students grow."
Anderson enjoys staying active outside of school through trail running and attending local trivia contests with his wife.
Meanwhile, Michaels will begin a new chapter as principal of Lycoming Valley Intermediate School. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology with Elementary Teaching Certification (K-6) from Wilkes University and a Master of Science in Educational Leadership from Duquesne University.
Michaels brings more than two decades of experience in education to his new role. During his tenure with the Williamsport Area School District, he spent nine years at Cochran Primary School, including two years as dean of students/assistant principal and seven years as principal. He then served 12 years as principal of Curtin Intermediate School and is preparing to begin his 22nd year as a Millionaire.
"I am incredibly proud to have been part of the Curtin Collective for the past 12 years," said Michaels. "The building is home to some of the finest educators and individuals I have had the privilege to work alongside. While I will always value the relationships and experiences I gained at Curtin, I am excited for the opportunity to build new connections and contributing to the great work ahead."
Michaels also reflected on the district that has shaped his career: "It is an honor to work in the Williamsport Area School District," said Michaels. "Our district leadership team and teachers continually collaborate to provide innovative, supportive opportunities for both our students and staff. Most importantly, across every building and department, our district is made up of an exceptionally caring, student-centered group of professionals who are dedicated to developing responsible citizens through excellence in education. I am proud to be part of the WASD community."
Outside of school, Michaels enjoys spending time with his wife, Tara, and their four children.
As the 2026-2027 school year approaches, both leaders look forward to continuing the district's commitment to student success while building strong relationships with students, staff, families, and the community.
