WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (NOVEMBER 8, 2022) — For the first time since 2019, the Williamsport Area School District Education Foundation (WASDEF), in partnership with the district’s Title 1 department, has brought back its annual Holiday Essay Contest.

The contest invites kindergarten to third-grade students to respond to the prompt: “In 200 words or less, what are you most thankful for during the holiday season and why?”

Deadline is Tuesday, Nov. 29. Students may turn in their entries to their classroom teachers. Entries must clearly identify a student’s name and school building. Winners will be announced on Tuesday, Dec. 6.

The top 25 essay winners will receive an exclusive ride on Williamsport’s trolley for a Holiday Tour of Lights on the evening of Dec. 14, thanks to River Valley Transit Authority. They’ll also receive a special gift and a story time session with hot cocoa and cookies — prepared and served by Williamsport Area High School culinary arts students — in the Rotunda of the James V. Brown Library following the trolley tour.

In addition, the top two essay contest winners will have their photo and essay published in the Williamsport Sun-Gazette’s Education section and receive a gift certificate to the AMC theatre downtown.

The Williamsport Area School District Education Foundation is a recognized nonprofit affiliate of the school district. Led by a 20-member volunteer board of directors, the education foundation facilitates charitable giving and permanent legacies based on individual areas of interest in educational innovation, the arts, athletics and scholarships.
