WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (DECEMBER 18, 2018) — An additional opportunity for students to earn industry certification is now available through Clark Sarge’s engineering and robotics class at Williamsport Area High School.

Having recently been certified by FANUC America, one of the largest makers of industrial robots in the world, Sarge can now train students for certification in hands-on, industrial robot operations.

Using the FANUC CERT System, students can train on a FANUC robot exactly like one they would encounter in a real-world industrial setting. The CERT system provides the necessary training to the instructor as well as a curriculum to introduce students to robot applications that include integrated vision systems (iRVision), programming a logic controller, and using ROBOGUIDE simulation software.

To accompany the CERT program, WAHS purchased a new, innovative educational tooling package with federal grant funding. With this package, students will use the same robots and software that are used in industry. Sarge will use the new package to integrate even more robot training into his current engineering and robotics programs.

Students who complete the training qualify to take a national assessment examination to receive the FANUC Certified Robot Operator I Certification and compete for jobs in this industry sector.

“This means my students will leave the program with another industry-recognized certification,” Sarge said. “This will make them even more attractive to potential employers who need this in-demand skill.”

FANUC’s program has been implemented in 724 high schools across the country.

“I am proud to recognize Mr. Sarge’s efforts to obtain this certification from FANUC,” said Matt Fisher, director of career and technical education at WAHS. “It is very exciting to see students learning the same technologies that are being used by leading manufacturers in our area.  The success of our CTE programs is built on providing students with the industry-aligned experiences that employers are seeking and the FANUC certification is a great addition to a student’s portfolio.”

Sarge’s engineering and robotics course is one of the 15 workforce development courses made available to WAHS students through the high school’s Career and Technical Education program
