WAHS Junior to Compete at Poetry Out Loud State Championship

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (JANUARY 22, 2020) — Williamsport Area High School junior Oam Patel will compete at the Poetry Out Loud state championship after securing a first-place win at the regional level in Towanda on Jan. 17.

Patel earned his first-place win by reciting "Dream Song 14" by John Berryman, "After Working 60 Hours Again for What Reason?" by Bob Hicok, and "Charles Sumner" by Charlotte L. Fortin Grimke.

The 2020 state championship will take place on March 9 at the Harrisburg State Museum.

According to its website, "Poetry Out Loud (POL) encourages the nation’s youth to learn about great poetry through memorization and recitation. More than 3.8 million high school students from more than 16,000 high schools across the United States have discovered the magic of beautiful language through Poetry Out Loud."

Patel is member of the WAHS cross country team, STEM Club, Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) and Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD).
