7.  CURRICULUM REPORT

  Questions may be directed to Dr. Adams.

 

7.1   Consider approving 20 teachers from Sheridan Elementary to participate in a 2 hour staff development session at the J.V. Brown Library on May 10, 2007. The session will focus on the following topics: available resources for children and parents and accessing electronic resources such as Power Library and the Learning Express Library. There is no cost to the district.

 

7.2   Consider approving inclusion training for 14 aides from Jackson and Cochran Elementary Schools on Thursday, May 10, 2007. The training will be provided by BLaST Intermediate Unit. There is no cost to the district.

 

7.3   Consider approving the fees for continued participation of Cochran Elementary School in the Ohio State University Primary and Intermediate Literacy Collaborative for the 2006-07 school year at an approximate cost of $1,300 and the 2007-08 school year at an approximate cost of $800. The costs are for Site Affiliation and Research Fees. All costs are budgeted under Comprehensive School Reform (2006-07) and Title I (2007-08) grants.

 

 

 

 

 

7.   CURRICULUM REPORT CONT’D:

 

7.4   Consider approving the fees for continued participation of Jackson Elementary School in the Ohio State University Primary Literacy Collaborative for the 2006-07 and 2007-08 school years at approximately cost of $600. per year. The costs are for Site Affiliation and Research Fees. All costs are budgeted under Comprehensive School Reform (2006-07) and Title I (2007-08) grants.

 

7.5   Consider approving the fees for continued participation of Jackson Elementary School in the Lesley University Intermediate Literacy Collaborative for the 2007-08 school year at an approximate cost of $4,500. The costs are for Site Visit Fees, Site Affiliation and Research Fees. All costs are budgeted under Title I.

 

7.6   Consider approving Theodore Piwowar, Director of Career and Technical Education, to submit an application to the Pennsylvania Department of Education for a Project 720 Grant in the maximum amount available to the Williamsport Area School District, tentatively set at $100,000. The purpose of this funding is to create high school environments that are student-centered, results-focused, data-informed, and personalized in a way that is seamlessly supported by systems, resources, technology and shared leadership.

 

7.7   Consider approving Theodore R. Piwowar, Director of Career and Technical Education, to submit an application to the Pennsylvania Department of Education for a College and Career Counseling Program grant in the maximum amount available, currently $180,000. The purpose of this funding is to create a vibrant career exploration, career planning and goal setting process for each and every student in grades 8-12 by creating a student-centered career development system facilitated by the school counselors and academic leaders.

8.1  RESIGNATIONS

 

Consider accepting the following resignation(s), effective on the dates and for the purposes indicated:

 

A.   Gerald W. Engel, full-time custodian at Stevens Elementary School, for the purpose of retirement, effective May 31, 2007.

 

  RESOLVED: that the Board of School Directors of the Williamsport Area School District acknowledges with profound regret the retirement of Gerald W. Engel from service in the Williamsport Area Schools and expresses its sincere appreciation for his over 17 years of dedicated service to our school system as a custodian. It further expresses the hope that his years of retirement will be many and richly rewarding.

 

 

 

8.1  RESIGNATIONS CONT’D:

 

B.   Judith J. Packard, general food service worker at the high school, for personal reasons, effective May 4, 2007.

 

8.2  LEAVES OF ABSENCE

 

  Consider approving the following leave(s) of absence:

 

 A.   Karen L. Benson, full-time instructional support aide at the high school, for an unpaid leave on an intermittent basis (as needed), effective April 17, 2007, through June 8, 2007.

 

8.3*   ELECTION OF STAFF  

 

  Consider the election of the following staff, for the purpose and on the date indicated:  

 

 A.   Joshua E. Klinger, R.R. 1, Box 30B, Dalmatia, as a full-time (245 days, 7 hours per     day) Network Coordinator/Telecommunications Support for the District, effective     May 7, 2007, with a base wage rate of $27,544 ($14.99 per hour), prorated, plus       applicable benefits as provided under the collective bargaining agreement between    WASD and WAESP (replacing Angelic Parrett, resigned).

 

 B.   Angela L. Deitrick, 1403 Almond St., Williamsport, as a part-time Aide/Study Hall Monitor-Regular Education (up to 180 days, up to 5 hours per day) at the high school, effective May 1, 2007, with a base wage rate of $10.94 per hour, FICA, Worker's Compensation, Retirement (if eligible), and sick leave (per the Agreement between the Board and the Williamsport Area Support Personnel) are the only fringe benefits (replacing Renee Barbee, transferred).

 

 C.   Bonnie J. Mynczywor, 209 Rader Ave., Cogan Station, as a part-time (185 days, prorated; up to 5 hours per day) Health Room Technician at the high school, at the rate of $12.94 per hour (no benefits except social security, retirement, and worker’s compensation) and sick leave as provided for part-time employees per the Agreement between the Board and the Williamsport Area Support Personnel (WASP), effective May 2, 2007 (replacing Rachel Scott, resigned).

 

 D.   The following substitute food service workers, at the salary rate of $6.75 per hour, for the actual number of hours worked, effective date as indicated:

   Tammi M. Logue   68 Rosemary Drive, Cogan Station (effective 04/26/07)

9.  PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

9.1   RELEASED TIME/TRAINING PROGRAMS

 

Consider approving released time for staff members to participate in professional development activities in accordance with the Professional Development Plan of the Williamsport Area School District and consider approving training programs. All expenditures proposed are within local, state and federal budget categories approved as noted. (See attachment)      

 

10.   STUDENT/COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES

  Questions may be directed to Dr. Kelley.

 

10.1*   Consider approving the following student trips:

 

  All students must be in compliance with the school’s field trip disciplinary requirements

 in order to participate.

 

A.   Fifteen (15) U.S. Government AP students from the Williamsport Area High School, accompanied by their teacher, to travel to Penn College during May 2007 to attend a seminar.

 

The students will be transported by their parents. The only cost to the District would be for one substitute at a cost not to exceed $110.00.

 

B.   Ten (10) emotional support students from the Williamsport Area High School, accompanied by two teachers and two aides, to travel Lycoming Creek and Rock Run on two separate dates during May 2007.

 

Transportation will be provided in the school van. A private vehicle may be provided to transportation for staff if needed.

 

C.   Approximately 30 members of Curtin Middle School’s Student Council, accompanied by staff members, to travel to Knoebel’s Grove on a Saturday during June 2007.

 

District transportation is requested. The trip will be funded by the participating students and Student Council funds.

 

D.   Approximately 150 eighth grade students from Roosevelt Middle School, accompanied by their teachers, to travel to Little Pine State Park (Waterville) during May 2007.

 

    District transportation is requested. The 8th Grade Team will be funding the trip.

 

 

 

10.1*   Consider approving the following student trips cont’d:

 

E.   Retroactive Approval: Twenty (20) Williamsport Area High School science students, accompanied by their teacher, to travel to the Penn College Aviation Center during April 2007 to do career exploration.

 

District transportation is requested and will be paid by Penn College. One substitute will be required for the day with the cost being reimbursed by Penn College.

 

F.   Fifty-two (52) fourth grade students from Round Hills Elementary School, accompanied by their teachers and parent chaperones, to travel to the Pioneer Mine Tunnel (Ashland) during May 2007.

 

District transportation is requested. All costs will be paid by the Round Hills PTO.

 

G.   Forty-eight (48) first grade students from Round Hills Elementary School, accompanied by their teachers and a student teacher, to travel to Giant Market, Little League Headquarters, and Memorial Park during May 2007.

 

District transportation is requested. All costs will be paid by the Round Hills PTO.

 

H.   Forty-one (41) fifth grade students from Sheridan Elementary School, accompanied by their teachers and parent chaperones, to travel to Harrisburg during May 2007 to visit the Whitaker Science Center and the Capitol Building.

 

Transportation will be provided by contract carrier. Funds will be provided by student fundraising.

 

I.   Ninety-five (95) Williamsport Area High School Concert Choir members, accompanied by their teachers, to travel to Hershey Park on a Saturday during May 2007 as a reward for their participation in the choral program.

 

District transportation is requested. Funding will be provided from the Choir Account.

 

J.   Twenty (20) Williamsport Area High School National Art Honor Society, accompanied by two teachers, to travel to Washington, DC during May 2007 to visit the National Gallery of Art and Smithsonian.

 

Transportation will be provided by contract carrier. All costs will be paid from the student activity fund. Two substitutes will be required for the day at a cost not to exceed $220.00.

 

K.   Approximately 115 first grade students from Jackson Elementary School, accompanied by their teachers and a paraprofessional, to travel to T&D’ ;s Cats of the World (Penns Creek) during May 2007.

 

    District transportation is requested. All costs will be paid by the Jackson PTO.

 

10.1*   Consider approving the following student trips cont’d:

 

L.   Eighty-seven (87) kindergarten students from Jackson Elementary School, accompanied by their teachers and parent volunteers, to travel to Lane’s End Farm (Jersey Shore) during May 2007.

 

    District transportation is requested and will be paid by the Jackson PTO.

 

M.   Approximately 102 third grade students from Jackson Elementary School, accompanied by their teachers, aides, and parent volunteers, to travel to the Montour Preserve during May 2007.

 

    District transportation is requested and will be paid by the Jackson PTO.

 

N.   Ninety-five (95) members of the Williamsport Area High School’s Concert Choir, accompanied by their teachers, to travel to Hershey Park on a Saturday during May 2007 as a reward for their participation.

 

Transportation will be provided by contract carrier. All costs will be paid from the Choir Account.

 

O.   Seventy-five (75) fourth grade students from Cochran Elementary School, accompanied by their teachers and an aide, to travel to the Pioneer Tunnel and Steam Train during May 2007.

 

District transportation is requested. All costs will be paid by the Cochran School Association.

 

P.   Forty-seven (47) fourth grade students from Sheridan Elementary School, accompanied by their teachers and parent volunteers, to travel to World’s End State Park during May 2007.

 

    District transportation is requested. All costs will be paid by the Sheridan PTO.

Board Policy #902, “Public Participation in Board Meetings”:

 

A.   There will be two public comment sections: one during the first two hours of

the meeting at a time to be determined by the presiding officer; and the other at the end of the meeting. This gives the presiding officer some flexibility to fit the first public comment section into the agenda at a convenient time.

 

B.   Persons submitting a formal request to speak during the first public comments section should be present promptly at the beginning of the meeting in the event that they are invited to speak prior to commencement of the scheduled business that is outlined in the agenda. Persons who have submitted a written request will be given an opportunity to make a presentation about an issue that is on the agenda when the issue is scheduled for discussion or about an issue that is not on the agenda during the first two hours of the Board meeting, at a time to be determined by the presiding officer.

 

C.   Each public comment section will be limited to a maximum of 20 minutes. Each speaker will be limited to a maximum of five minutes.

 

D.   Those wishing to speak during the first public comments section must submit a formal request in writing to the business administrator no later that 9:00 a.m. on the day of the Board meeting. This gives people an opportunity to come to the District Service Center on Monday before the Board meeting to read the posted agenda.
