2.   Congratulations to the Cochran Elementary School Odyssey of the Mind team for placing first out of 16 teams in the “Around the World in 8 Minutes.” They will be participating in the state competition in Altoona in April. The team, coached by Spring Moore and Shelby Weber, consisted of the following members:

7.2   Consider approving APL Instructional Skills – Level I Workshop for up to 45 participants July 30 – August 3, 2007. Approximate costs are $12,000 and are budgeted in string number 10-2271-329-395-30-850-000-065-0007.

 

7.3   Consider the approval of a health software package from Central Susquehanna Intermediate Unit to replace the module originally supplied by Weidenhammer, which was determined to be inoperable. Funding ($8,125 purchase, $982 first year enhancement service, $1,232 installation and training) will come from a combination of a refund from Weidenhammer and the Health Services budget.

8.3*  ELECTION OF STAFF  

 

  Consider the election of the following staff, for the purpose and on the date indicated:  

 

 A.   Kathleen M. Dennis, 843 Picnic Woods Rd., Jersey Shore, as a long-term substitute teacher, effective January 22, 2007, through the end of the second semester of the 2006-2007 school term (tentative ending date of June 8, 2007), unless terminated sooner, to teach classroom music at Round Hills Elementary School, at a salary rate of Step 1, Master’s + 9, $42,050, prorated.

 

 B.   The following persons as Elementary Summer School Teachers, assignment to be       determined, for 3.5 hours per day, 5 days per week, plus one 30 minute building       meeting each week, beginning July 9 through August 3, 2007 at the rate of $27.03     per hour plus appropriate benefits, plus up to two professional development days at     $90 per day. All costs are budgeted under Sheridan Project Grant (*pending receipt    of all necessary paperwork):

8.5  OTHER

 

A.   Consider authorizing hiring Diane E. Welch, 10596 W. Route 973 Highway, Jersey Shore, general education mathematics teacher at Lycoming Valley Middle School, to provide two (2) hours of tutoring a week for the remainder of the school year to a deaf student, at the rate of $26.22 per hour (to be funded from the General Fund).

 

B.   Consider authorizing hiring Meagan B. Falvo, 82 Schmouder Drive, Trout Run, an interpreter for a hearing impaired student, to provide support during math tutoring for two (2) hours each week for the remainder of the school year to a deaf student, at the rate of $22.49 per hour (to be funded from the General Fund).

 

9.  PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

9.1   RELEASED TIME/TRAINING PROGRAMS

 

Consider approving released time for staff members to participate in professional development activities in accordance with the Professional Development Plan of the Williamsport Area School District and consider approving training programs. All expenditures proposed are within local, state and federal budget categories approved as noted. (See attachment)      

 

10.   STUDENT/COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES

10.1*   Consider approving the following student trips:

 

  All students must be in compliance with the school’s field trip disciplinary requirements

 in order to participate.

 

A.   Forty-seven (47) eighth grade enriched language arts students from Curtin Middle School, accompanied by their teachers and staff members, to travel to the Community Arts Center during April 2007 to view the movie “To Kill A Mockingbird.”

 

District transportation is requested (10-1100-519-000-550-160-016-0000). One substitute will be required for part of the day at a cost not to exceed $110.00.

 

B.   Fifty-two (52) eighth grade enriched language arts students from Roosevelt Middle School, accompanied by their teachers and staff members, to travel to the Community Arts Center during April 2007 to view the movie “To Kill A Mockingbird.”

 

District transportation is requested (10-1100-519-000-650-160-016-0000). Two substitutes will be required for part of the day at a cost not to exceed $220.00.

 

C.   Fifty-three (53) eighth grade enriched language arts students from Lycoming Valley Middle School, accompanied by their teachers and staff members, to travel to the Community Arts Center during April 2007 to view the movie “ To Kill A Mockingbird.”

 

District transportation is requested (10-1100-519-000-600-160-016-0000). One substitute will be required for part of the day at a cost not to exceed $110.00.

 

D.   Approximately 30 learning support students from the Williamsport Area High School, accompanied by their teachers, to travel to the Holiday Inn (downtown Williamsport) during May 2007 to attend the annual Vocational Training Awards Recognition Breakfast.

 

Transportation will be provided by the Billtown Trolley and paid for by the City of Williamsport. The cost of the breakfast will be $7.25 per person plus 18% gratuity (10-1200-635-000-30-850-000-004-0000). Three substitutes will be required for one half-day at a cost not to exceed $180.00.

 

E.   Four (4) members of Curtin Middle School’s MathCounts Team, accompanied by their teacher, to travel to Harrisburg on two dates during March 2007 to attend the 2007 Pennsylvania MathCounts competition.

 

    There will be no cost to the District.

 

 

 

10.1*   Consider approving the following student trips cont’d:

 

F.   Four (4) Williamsport Area High School students, accompanied by Ken Welsh (former WASD mathematics department chair), to travel to Bucknell University during March 2007 to attend a math contest.

 

  There will be no cost to the District.

 

G.   Approximately 105 eighth grade language arts students from Lycoming Valley and Roosevelt Middle Schools, accompanied by their teachers, to travel to Curtin Middle School on separate dates in March 2007. The students will be seeing a dramatization of “To Kill a Mockingbird.”

 

  District transportation is requested (10-1100-519-000-600(650)-160-016-0000).

 

H.   Approximately 6 seventh grade students from Curtin Middle School, accompanied by their teacher, to travel to Lycoming College during March 2007 to attend Math Awareness Day.

 

  The students will walk to and from the college. The only cost to the District will be for one substitute for the day at a cost not to exceed $110.00.

 

I.   Twenty-five (25) Spanish language students from the Williamsport Area High School, accompanied by their teacher, to travel to New York City during April 2007. The students will have an opportunity to visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art and to dine in an authentic Spanish restaurant.

 

  Transportation will be provided by contract carrier (10-1100-519-000-30-850-160-016-0000). Other fees will be charged to 101-1100-582-000-30-850-160-016-0000. One substitute will be required for the day at a cost not to exceed $110.00.

 

J.   Eighteen (18) members of the Williamsport Area High School’s Model United Nations Club, accompanied by their teacher, to travel to Lock Haven University on two dates during April 2007 to participate in a Model United Nations event.

 

District transportation is requested (10-1100-519-000-30-850-190-016-0000). Two substitute will be required for the day at a cost not to exceed $220.00.

 

K.   Sixty-five (65) second grade students from Stevens Elementary School, accompanied by their teachers and parent volunteers, to travel to the Montour Preserve during May 2007 for a tour.

 

    District transportation is requested. All costs will be paid by the Stevens PTA.

 

 

 

 

 

10.1*   Consider approving the following student trips cont’d:

 

L.   Eight (8) autistic support students from the Williamsport Area High School, accompanied by their teacher, a TSS, and eight aides, to travel to Stoltzfus Greenhouse & Farm Market, Oval Country Store, and Little Pine Park during May 2007.

 

The students will be transported in the school van. There will be no cost to the District.

 

M.   Forty-eight (48) second grade students from Round Hills Elementary School, accompanied by their teachers, a personal care aide, and parent chaperones, to travel to the Community Arts Center and Memorial Park during May 2007.

 

District transportation is requested. All costs will be paid by the Round Hills PTO.

 

10.2   Consider approving the following request for facility use:

 

 A.   Williamsport AYSO to use the multi-purpose room at Cochran Elementary School     on Thursday, April 19, 2007 and Friday, April 20, 2007 from 5:30 pm to 9:00 pm       to pose for team pictures. Williamsport AYSO is requesting relief from the       occupancy fee estimated at $80.00. Certificate of Insurance on file.

 

 B.   Brandon Little League to use the gymnasium at Cochran Elementary School on

    Tuesdays, beginning March 15 through May 1, 2007 from 6:15 p.m. until 7:45 p.m

    to hold Little League practice. Brandon Little League is requesting relief from the

    occupancy fee estimated at 175.00. Certificate of Insurance to be received.

 

11.  BIDS/CONTRACTS

11.1   Consider approving a contract with the Holiday Inn Downtown Williamsport for an awards recognition breakfast on May 24, 2007, to honor approximately 30 special education students involved in the Community Work Experience Program. Parents, classroom teachers, aides, district administrators, employers, parents, and community dignitaries will also participate in the event. The students will take a trip aboard the Hiawatha after breakfast.

 

The cost of the breakfast will be $7.25 per person plus 18% gratuity (10-1200-635-000-30-850-000-004-0000). Transportation will be on the Billtown Trolley which will be provided by the City of Williamsport.

Board Policy #902, “Public Participation in Board Meetings”:

 

A.   There will be two public comment sections: one during the first two hours of

the meeting at a time to be determined by the presiding officer; and the other at the end of the meeting. This gives the presiding officer some flexibility to fit the first public comment section into the agenda at a convenient time.

 

B.   Persons submitting a formal request to speak during the first public comments section should be present promptly at the beginning of the meeting in the event that they are invited to speak prior to commencement of the scheduled business that is outlined in the agenda. Persons who have submitted a written request will be given an opportunity to make a presentation about an issue that is on the agenda when the issue is scheduled for discussion or about an issue that is not on the agenda during the first two hours of the Board meeting, at a time to be determined by the presiding officer.

 

C.   Each public comment section will be limited to a maximum of 20 minutes. Each speaker will be limited to a maximum of five minutes.

 

D.   Those wishing to speak during the first public comments section must submit a formal request in writing to the business administrator no later that 9:00 a.m. on the day of the Board meeting. This gives people an opportunity to come to the District Service Center on Monday before the Board meeting to read the posted agenda.
