7.  CURRICULUM REPORT

7.1   Consider approving Joel Ryder, half-time art teacher at WAHS to be paid up to 10 additional half-days beyond his work schedule to participate in full-day inservices during the 2006-07 school year.

 

7.2   Consider approving Crissy Walker, a special education teacher at Roosevelt Middle School, to provide afterschool support services beginning October 3, 2006 to special education students as part of the EAP program at the hourly curriculum rate. Salary not to exceed $2,000 will be paid out of ACCESS. The budget account number is 10-1200-121-891-20-650-000-004-0007.

 

 

 

7.   CURRICULUM REPORT CONT’D:

 

7.3   Consider approving participation of WAHS students Chelsey Erb, Amber Lee, and Matthew Hartsock in Leadership Lycoming’s Youth Leadership Lycoming Program. The students will participate in 11 program days throughout the 2006-07 school year with other high school students throughout Lycoming County. The purposes of the program are to learn more about the local community, to build students’ leadership skills, and to encourage community service. Tuition is $500 per student and is budgeted under Project 720 budget account #10-1100-569-395-30-850-000-065-0007.

 

7.4   Consider approving revisions of Sections II, IV & X of the Eighth Grade Lit/Media Curriculum document that was formerly approved by the Board September 6, 2005.

 

7.5   Consider approving payment to Margaret M. Harpster, 96 Evergreen Dr., Linden, teacher at Round Hills Elementary School, at the rate of $90 per day for up to one and one-half (1½) days for writing IEP's before the start of the school term to ensure educational services for the 2006-2007 school term.

  Consider approving the following leaves of absence:

 

 A.   Tiffani A. Ault, full-time mathematics teacher at Curtin Middle School, for an unpaid medical leave, effective October 3, 2006, through the end of the 2006-2007 school year (tentative date of June 8, 2006).

 

    Mrs. Ault is currently utilizing sick and/or personal days and will begin her unpaid leave of absence on October 3, 2006, which will be taken under the Family Medical Leave Act, which entitles the employee to health insurance for a maximum of 12 weeks, but is without pay or any other benefits, and then will be on an unpaid leave for the remainder of the year.

 

 B.   Kimberly A. Barry, full-time elementary (2nd grade) teacher at Hepburn-Lycoming Elementary School, for an unpaid medical leave, effective October 20, 2006, through November 10, 2006.

 

    Mrs. Barry's leave of absence is taken under the Family Medical Leave Act, which entitles the employee to health insurance for a maximum of 12 weeks, but is without pay or any other benefits.

9.1   RELEASED TIME/TRAINING PROGRAMS

 

Consider approving released time for staff members to participate in professional develop-ment activities in accordance with the Professional Development Plan of the Williamsport Area School District and consider approving training programs. All expenditures proposed are within local, state and federal budget categories approved as noted. (See attachment)    

10.   STUDENT/COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES

10.1*   Consider approving the following student trips:

 

A.   Fifty (50) third grade students from Round Hills Elementary School, accompanied by their teachers and parent volunteers, to travel to Penn State University during December 2006 to attend a children’s theater performance and presentations at the Departments of Earth Science and Astronomy, the Sports Museum, and the Palmer Art Gallery.

 

District transportation is requested. All costs will be paid by the Round Hills PTO.

 

 

 

10.1*   Consider approving the following student trips cont’d:

 

B.   Eight (8) autistic support students accompanied by their teacher, seven aides, and one TSS, to travel to Wegman’s on five dates during October, November and December 2006 and January and March 2007. The students will have an opportunity to prepare and follow a shopping list, etc. Students eligible to participate will not have been suspended from school more than five days; will have no bus disciplinary record; will be passing all major courses; and are not, in the judgment of their house principal, experiencing attendance difficulties.

 

    Transportation will be provided in the school van.

 

C.   Fifteen (15) life skills support students from the Williamsport Area High School, accompanied by their teachers and four aides, to travel to the Williamsport Hospital on Mondays and Wednesdays from September 2006 through May 2007. The students will use the River Valley Transit bus to ride to the hospital to participate in job training. Students eligible to participate will not have been suspended from school more than five days; will have no bus disciplinary record; will be passing all major courses; and are not, in the judgment of their house principal, experiencing attendance difficulties.

 

    All costs will be paid through the special education budget.

 

D.   Thirty (30) members of the Williamsport Area High School’s Strolling Strings, accompanied by their director and WAHS Orchestra Association chaperones, to travel to Hershey Lodge to perform for the Lions Club of Hershey and the Williamsport Country Club to perform for the WAHS Class of 1946 on dates during September 2006. Students eligible to participate must be in compliance with the school’s field trip disciplinary requirements.

 

District transportation is not required and there will not be a cost to the District for either trip.

 

E.   Four (4) members of the Williamsport Area High School’s Student Government Association, accompanied by their advisor and principal, to travel to State College during September 2006 to attend a conference. Students eligible to participate will not have been suspended from school more than five days; will have no bus disciplinary record; will be passing all major courses; and are not, in the judgment of their house principal, experiencing attendance difficulties.

 

  Transportation will be provided in the school van. All costs will be paid with SGA funds.

G.  Sixty-eight (68) 9th Grade Academy Students from the Williamsport Area High School, accompanied by staff members for an 8:1 ratio, to travel to the Pennsylvania College of Technology during September 2006 to receive etiquette training. The students will also visit the Taber Museum and the new transportation center. Students eligible to participate will not have been suspended from school more than five days; will have no bus disciplinary record; will be passing all major courses; and are not, in the judgment of their house principal, experiencing attendance difficulties.

 

  District transportation is requested. All costs will be paid through Project 720.

 

H.   Thirty (30) members of the Williamsport Area High School’s Strolling Strings, accompanied by their director and WAHS Orchestra Association chaperones, to travel to the following locations:

  1. Hemlock Girl Scout Council to use the multi-purpose room at Stevens Elementary School on October 2, 2006, from 6:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. to hold a recruitment night on scouting. The Girl Scout Council is requesting relief of the occupancy fees estimated at $40.00. Certificate of Insurance on file. Hemlock Girl Scout Council would also like to request that whenever a school building is used for regular meetings throughout the year those fees also be waived.

10.2   Consider approving the following request for facility use:

 

  1. Susquehanna Council of Boy Scouts of America to use the lobby at Sheridan

Elementary School on September 13, 2006, from 5:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. to hold a recruitment night on scouting. The Boy Scout Council is requesting relief of the occupancy fees estimated at $15.00. Certificate of Insurance on file. The Boy Scout Council would also like to request that whenever a school building is used for regular meetings throughout the year those fees also be waived

 

C.   Lycoming County Bureau of Elections to use space at Curtin and Roosevelt Middle Schools on Tuesday, November 7, 2006 from 7:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. as General Election polling places. The Lycoming County Bureau of Elections is requesting relief of the occupancy fee estimated at $30.00. They are responsible for the cost of a security person at each site. Certificate of Insurance waived.

Board Policy #902, “Public Participation in Board Meetings”:

 

A.   There will be two public comment sections: one during the first two hours of

the meeting at a time to be determined by the presiding officer; and the other at the end of the meeting. This gives the presiding officer some flexibility to fit the first public comment section into the agenda at a convenient time.

 

B.   Persons submitting a formal request to speak during the first public comments section should be present promptly at the beginning of the meeting in the event that they are invited to speak prior to commencement of the scheduled business that is outlined in the agenda. Persons who have submitted a written request will be given an opportunity to make a presentation about an issue that is on the agenda when the issue is scheduled for discussion or about an issue that is not on the agenda during the first two hours of the Board meeting, at a time to be determined by the presiding officer.

 

C.   Each public comment section will be limited to a maximum of 20 minutes. Each speaker will be limited to a maximum of five minutes.

 

D.   Those wishing to speak during the first public comments section must submit a formal request in writing to the business administrator no later that 9:00 a.m. on the day of the Board meeting. This gives people an opportunity to come to the District Service Center on Monday before the Board meeting to read the posted agenda.
