The Regular Meeting of the Board of School Directors of the Williamsport Area School District of which all members were duly notified and of which due public notice was given as required by Act 84 of 1986, was held on Tuesday evening, August 1, 2000, beginning at 8:00 p.m. in the Board of Directors Room, District Service Center, 201 West Third Street, Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
The President, David B. Stone, Jr., called the meeting to order with the following members:

APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Motion made by Mr. Zimmerman, seconded by Mrs. Williams, to approve the Regular Meetings of April 18 and May 2, 2000, that the reading of the minutes be omitted and the minutes be approved as presented.

SUPERINTENDENTS REPORT Jackie Thomas (Acting Superintendent)
A. Representative Thomas W. Dempsey will be visiting our schools on September 15, 2000, as part of Americas Legislators Back to School Day.
BOARD PRESIDENTS REPORT Mr. David B. Stone Jr.
A. At the conclusion of tonights Board meeting, we will rerun a half-hour presentation entitled Back to School. The program will air from 9:30 to 10:00 p.m.
B. President Stone recognized Fred Holland to review the letter from Eugene W. Hickok, Secretary of Education of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, to the Honorable Clinton W. Smith concerning the Woodward Township transfer to the Jersey Shore School District. Mr. Holland reviewed the procedural steps remaining in the process. President Stone invited members of the public who wish to assist in resisting the transfer to contact us.

8.1* Authorize the following six (6) music teachers for summer curriculum work on the Middle School Music Classroom and Choral Curriculum. The work will be complete on non-school time at a rate of $75 per teacher per day.

8.2 Authorize Theodore R. Piwowar, Director of Career Education, in collaboration with the Susquehanna Health Systems Family Center for Reproductive Health, to apply for a Pregnant and Parenting Teen (PPT) grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Education in the amount of $15,000. The purpose of the PPT program is to assist pregnant and parenting teens with staying in school until graduation through individual and group supportive services, health care and nutritional education, parenting and child development information, vocational and career planning, and coordination of community services. If received, this will be the third year that the WASD has provided PPT services to Williamsport Area High School students as a collaborative effort with Susquehanna Health System.

Authorize Theodore R. Piwowar, Director of Career Education, in collaboration
with the Susquehanna Health Systems Family Center for Reproductive
Health, to apply for an ELECT (Education Leading to Employment & Career
Training) grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Education. The purpose of
this grant is to assist pregnant and parenting teens attending the Williamsport
Area High School with staying in school until graduation. All participants
must be receiving Temporary Aid to Needy Families (TANF) welfare benefits
and/or food stamps. Services to be provided include: intensive case
management, attendance and retention activities, summer programming, transition
services, health care/nutrition/parenting information, individual and group
counseling, and vocational and career planning. Optional activities include
alternative education, GED programming, and retrieval services.

9.1 RESIGNATIONS - Accept the following resignations, effective on the dates and for the purposes indicated:
A. Norma F. Losch, full-time second grade teacher at Round Hills Elementary School, for the purpose of retirement, effective July 25, 2000.
RESOLVED: that the Board of School Directors of the Williamsport Area School District acknowledges with profound regret the retirement of Norma F. Losch from service in the Williamsport Area Schools and expresses its sincere appreciation for her 20 years of dedicated service to our school system as a teacher. It further expresses the hope that her years of retirement will be many and richly rewarding.
C. Corey M. Wright, mathematics teacher at Roosevelt Middle School, for other employment, effective August 14, 2000.
D. Mari A. Fauth, guidance counselor at Sheridan and Woodward Elementary Schools, due to relocation out of the area, effective August 23, 2000.
A. Kathi E. Kelley, 1937 Summit Court, Montoursville, Reading Specialist at Jackson Elementary School, for a sabbatical leave effective for the first semester of the 2000-2001 school year (tentative return date January 16, 2001), for the purpose of health restoration.
Mrs. Kelley has been a teacher in the District since September 2, 1975, and has not taken a previous sabbatical.
B. Sherri K. Buckwalter, second grade teacher at Hepburn-Lycoming Elementary School, extension of maternity leave, effective August 24, 2000, through the end of the first semester of the 2000-2001 school year (tentative return date January 16, 2001).
C. Jeanne A. Goodell, special education learning support teacher at Cochran Elementary School, for an unpaid medical leave, effective August 31, 2000, through November 22, 2000.
Mrs. Goodell's leave of absence is taken under the Family Medical Leave Act, which entitles the employee to health insurance for a maximum of 12 weeks, but is without pay or any other benefits.

Comerford, 1709 Clarion Dr., Williamsport, as a long-term substitute teacher, effective August 24, 2000, through the end of the first semester of the 2000-2001 school term (tentative date of January 12, 2001), unless terminated sooner, as a guidance counselor at the high school, at a salary rate of Level 1, Year 1, Masters, $38,842, prorated, pending receipt of Emergency Certification from the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Ms. Comerford holds a bachelor's degree from Syracuse University and a master s degree from Marywood College and is certified in Elementary School Guidance (replacing Carole Heckel, on sabbatical leave).

of the WASD calendar year in August 2000 and end with the end of the student
calendar in June 2001. Funding is being provided by the Lycoming-Clinton
Mental Health/Mental Retardation Joinder Program under a contractual
arrangement.
