The Regular Meeting of the Board of School Directors of the Williamsport Area School District of which all members were duly notified and of which due public notice was given as required by Act 84 of 1986, was held on Tuesday evening, August 7, 2001, beginning at 8:00 p.m. in the Board of Directors Room, District Service Center, 201 West Third Street, Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

Mr. Piwowar and Mrs. Temple are working with Mr. Armstrong from Susquehanna Health Systems to develop a certified nursing program beginning with the second semester. This program would have classroom and hospital components. We are excited about this partnership.
BOARD PRESIDENTS REPORT Mr. David B. Stone, Jr.
A. Erica Bowen, a 2001 Williamsport High School graduate, recently attended the National FBLA conference in Orlando, Florida, along with 5,000 other FBLA members from around the nation. Erica earned the right to compete in the category of Job Interview by placing first at the State competition earlier this year.
BOARD PRESIDENTS REPORT CONT'D:
B. Congratulations to the Williamsport Area High School staff and administration for their outstanding work with our advance placement students. Twenty-seven (27) students took 37 examinations. Of the total, 84% of the exams earned grades of 3 or better. Breaking that down, in the test of AP English Literature and Composition, there were 8 grades of either 4 or 5 (of which 3 were 5s); in the test of AP European History, there was one grade of a 5; in the test of AP Calculus AB, there were 9 grades of 4s and 5s (of which 7 were 5s); and in the test of Calculus BC, there were 6 grades of 4 or 5 (of which 5 were 5s).
We recognize the efforts of Mr. Bob McDonald, who developed the e-mail/internet AP course he uses with his students; Ms. Marilouise Mazzante, who taught our Modern European History honors course for only the second year of its existence ; Mr. Bill McQuown, Department Chair- Social Studies; Mr. Ken Welsh, who in addition to being the Department Chair for Mathematics, teaches the calculus courses; and Mr. Steve Huddy, High School Principal, who provides outstanding leadership and support to the staff and students.

CURRICULUM REPORT
Motion made by Mrs. Williams, seconded by Mrs. Markle, to approve the following curriculum items:
8.1 Approve Donald Enigk and Stephen Pfirman for up to one day of curriculum writing time to assist in the development of the Elementary Science Curriculum. Compensation will be at the substitute teachers rate and will be funded through Title II funds (String #141-2270-1-00-072-11-121).
8.2* Approve Michelle Boyles for up to three (3) days of curriculum writing time to develop the Primary Word Study component of the Williamsport Area School Districts Language Arts curriculum. Compensation will be at the substitute teachers rate and will be funded through Title II and curriculum development funds.
8.3* Approve a training on Final Cut Pro for the dates of August 13, 14, and 15, 2001 from
8:30 a.m. 4:00 p.m. to be held at the Williamsport Area High School for 12-15 staff members involved with Digital Video Grassroots Project for the district. The training will be run by Bruce Huffman of Accelerated Imagery, a Digital Media Consulting Firm. Mr. Huffman is the Coordinator of Digital Media Production for the Pennsylvania College of Technology.
Cost to the district would be $1,500 for the three days of training from Digital Grassroots Funds.
8.4 Approve the following Williamsport Area School District staff member to provide two days of Running Records Training for the Title I Extended Year program at the rate of $80 per day:

8.7* Approve Theodore R. Piwowar, Director of Career and Technical Education, to submit an application to the Pennsylvania Department of Education for the Perkins Local Plan in the amount of $145,926. This amount represents the 2001-2002 Perkins allocation for the School District. The Williamsport Area School District is authorized to submit an application under the Carl D. Perkins Vocational and Applied Technology Education Act of 1998. These funds must be utilized as outlined in the local plan according to Pennsylvania Department of Education regulations.

Authorize administration to provide inservice training for Williamsport Area
School District bus drivers on dealing with student behavior issues that affect
transportation, on Wednesday, August 22, 2001, for up to two hours (9:00 a.m.
- 11:00 a.m.) in the Board Room at the District Service Center. Program will
be presented by Sam Washington, Reginald Fatherly, and James Dugan. Authorize
payment to Sam Washington for his services beyond contract year at the rate of
$80 per day (pro-rated). Bus drivers will receive payment as per contract.
Estimated cost associated with inservice program is $1,091.
B.
Authorize the alternative education staff to work one day before the start of
the 2001-2002 school term to coordinate and complete the move from the District
Service Center to the Woodward School. Teaching staff will be paid for the
day at the rate of $80 per day. Support staff will be paid at the contract
rate.

RELEASED TIME/TRAINING PROGRAMS

for staff members to participate in professional development activities in
accordance with the Professional Development Plan of the Williamsport Area
School District and consider approving training programs. All expenditures
proposed are within local, state and federal budget categories approved as
noted.

11.1
Authorize an Intro to Microsoft Office Adult Night Class for 20 employees of
High Steel during the month of August 2001 to be held at the Williamsport Area
High School (exact dates and times to be determined). The cost of this course
will be $900.00, which includes use of the room, instructor fees, and technical
support. The instructor will be Clyde Phillips (Adult Education Night Class
Instructor) and will be paid at the rate of $21.89 per hour as per collective
bargaining agreement.
11.2
Williamsport Area High School Orchestra Association to use the auditorium and
cafeteria at Curtin Middle School as a rain-site location for the summer string
program performance. The orchestra association is planning on utilizing the
Brandon Park Bandshell for the concert. In case of inclement weather the
orchestra association is requesting use of Curtin on August 9, 2001, from 2:30
p.m. until 8:30 p.m. The orchestra association is requesting relief of the
occupancy fee, estimated at $80.00.
