The Special Meeting of the Board of School Directors of the Williamsport Area School District of which all members were duly notified and of which due public notice was given as required by Act 84 of 1986, was held on Tuesday evening, March 28, 2000, beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the Board of Directors’ Room, District Service Center, 201 West Third Street, Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

 

The President, David B. Stone, Jr., called the meeting to order with the following members:

 

PRESENT:   Shirley L. Canada, Karen V. Harris, Pamela J. Markle, Kelly R. Pedersen,

David B. Stone, Jr., James E. Temple, Dale L. Vollman, Lois T. Williams,

Thomas A. Zimmerman.

 

ABSENT:  None.

Committee Reports by Board Members

 

Mr. Zimmerman reported that the Alternative Education Committee had another meeting which was productive and included a good discussion. The committee is evaluating academics, vocational education and social re-entry for expelled students.

 

FINANCE REPORT

 

6.2*   Motion made by Mrs. Markle, seconded by Mrs. Pedersen, to authorize payment of invoices and services rendered by the list submitted marked Orders No. 3/28/00 in the amount of

  $461,273.49 and 3/28/00A in the amount of $188,622.49 and that the officers of the Board of School Directors be directed to execute Order Nos. 3/28/00 and 3/28/00A.

 

  The motion carried by a unanimous roll call.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

STUDENT/COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES:

 

Motion made by Mr. Temple, seconded by Mrs. Markle, to approve the following student field trips:

 

A.   Four (4) Williamsport Area High School choral students, accepted by competitive audition, to participate in the Pennsylvania Music Educators’ Association All-State Ensembles. The festival will be held at the PMEA State Conference in Pittsburgh, PA, on April 12-15, 2000. Walter Straiton, WAHS Orchestra Director, and Kent Weaver, WAHS Choral Director will accompany the students.

Cost to the District would be $860 for registration fees ($654 from 101-3212-3-26-160-23-813; $215 from 101-3214-3-26-160-23-813; and $800 (101-3212-3-26-160-23-581 and 101-3214-3-26-160-23-581) for teacher expenses. Student transportation will be provided by the teachers. One substitute will be needed for Mr. Straiton for one day; and one substitute will be needed for Mr. Weaver for two days.

 

B.   Thirty-five (35) members of the Williamsport Area High School’s Strolling Strings, accompanied by their director and other adult chaperones, to travel to Lancaster, PA, on Saturday, April 1, 2000, to perform at the Merrill Lynch Statewide Award Dinner.

 

Transportation is being provided by the client. There will be no cost to the District.

ITEMS FROM BOARD MEMBERS

 

Mrs. Williams reported that the choral concert was wonderful.

 

Mr. Zimmerman commended the faculty and staff for their efforts in responding to student needs following the death of a 9th grade student. He also indicated that the students gave a lot of support to each other.
