Special Education Statistics The Williamsport Area School District’s Department of Special Education provides a variety of classroom-based and itinerant services in its 10 buildings throughout the District. The District employs 79 special education teachers, 8 speech therapists, an itinerant vision support teacher, and an itinerant teacher of the hearing impaired. The Department also employs a variety of classroom paraprofessional and personal care aides. These individuals provide much needed services to students with disabilities. Paraprofessionals receive annual updated training based upon the population of students with whom they work. In addition, the District receives services from the BlaST Intermediate Unit. Program services include multi-district hearing impaired and multiple disabilities support classrooms and itinerant emotional support services. The Intermediate Unit also provides valuable staff development in best practices in general and special education. The District regularly participates in training such as positive behavior support, standards-based education, English as a Second Language (ESL), and autism spectrum disorders.
