Lycoming Valley students walk to raise money for school affected by Hurricane Katrina
UPDATE
Both the students and the faculty made it the 1377 miles to Colmer Middle School in Pascagoula, Mississippi.
The 7th grade came in first with 1403
total miles in 5 days.
The 8th grade came in second with 1402 miles in 5 days.
The 6th grade came in third with 1382 miles in 6 days.
The Faculty and Staff team of 35 people came in 4th with 1377 miles in 18 days.
The event has raised $850.00 to date. We
are hoping to reach the $1000.00 mark.
Lycoming Valley Middle School applied for and received a Keystone Healthy Zone grant given by PANA (Pennsylvania Advocates for Nutrition and Activity). Along with the $2000.00 they received in funding, they are encouraged to participate in KHZ sponsored events. One of these events was the “Walk to School Day” which took place on October 5th. They did not participate on the 5th because all of their students are bussed to school. Instead, they have planned an event in which their students will walk at school during Health, P.E., and Environmental Topics classes.
The students are going to be walking the mileage from Lycoming Valley to the sister school that they have adopted for the project, William Colmer Middle School. Colmer is located in Pascagoula, Mississippi. The building itself sustained water and wind damage as a result of Hurricane Katrina. The homes of 90% of the students and teachers received severe damage or they were lost completely. Many of the students and teachers are living in the upstairs of their homes, in tents, or in FEMA trailers.
Students at Lycoming Valley are not only walking to benefit themselves physically, but they are walking to benefit others. During the few weeks of this project they will be collecting contributions for the “Up and Running” jar. 4 teams will compete to be the first team to reach Colmer. The teams are as follows: the 6th grade, 7th grade, 8th grade, and the faculty and staff. When the mileage has been reached by one of the teams, all of the money that has been collected will be sent to directly to Colmer to help get them back “Up and Running.”
