FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Date:  October 6, 2004

The Williamsport Area High School has dismissed high school students at 12:00 noon (today, October 6, 2004), due to an oil smell, which resulted in some discomfort to numerous students and staff members. The oil smell was related to a small leak from an oil tank hose in the high school boiler room. The small oil leak had been cleaned up prior to the opening of school this morning. However, we were not able to contain the smell.

This early dismissal was for high school students only! All other schools throughout the District will follow the regular schedule.

The Williamsport Area School District dismissed the high school students early as a precautionary measure, to avoid any further discomfort to students or staff. There is no evidence of any serious repercussions to students or staff. District officials have communicated with representatives from the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to initiate appropriate procedures to deal with the small leak. A review of District procedures has been completed and DEP has verified that appropriate measures and remedies have been completed. The Williamsport Area High School will resume its regular schedule for students and staff, Thursday, October 7, 2004.
