WAHS presented a mock crash program, addressing the effects of driving while impaired such as drinking and driving or driving under the influence of drugs for 11th and 12th grade students on May 4th. The program was designed not only to demonstrate the consequences of drinking and driving to the responsible driver, but also to reinforce the effects it has on victims and families of those injured or killed.
Local paramedics, EMTs and members of the Fire and Rescue department responded to a simulated crash involving a drunk driver who injured and fatally wounded others in the accident. Students watched as injured parties were evacuated from the scene via ambulance and Life Flight, while the fatally injured party was placed in a hearse and taken to the morgue.
Following the simulation, students participated in additional educational instruction as a large group in the high school auditorium. Students watched a video and followed a live on-stage reenactment of circumstantial scenarios such as a preliminary hearing and court case, prison intake system, medical intervention at the hospital, and funeral arrangements.
The program culminated with a presentation given by Mr. Ike Bower, whose son was killed in a drinking and driving accident. Mr. Bower spoke to the students about his personal experiences and shared a song to his son.
