FIRE PREVENTION WEEK KICKOFF EVENTS
DOWNTOWN WILLIAMSPORT
MONDAY, OCTOBER 4, 2004
The City of Williamsport invites families in the Williamsport Area School District
to help kick-off Fire Prevention Week 2004 (October 3 – 9) at two seminars that will be held on Monday, October 4, 2004 at 11:00AM and 7:00PM at the Community Arts Center in Downtown Williamsport.
The free sessions, organized by City Fire Inspector Tom Swigart and sponsored by the Williamsport Bureau of Fire Prevention Division, will last approximately an hour and a half each. Two sessions have been planned in order to accommodate parents and families with varying schedules. Refreshments will be provided.
Parents and grandparents, bring your cameras…Smokey Bear, who celebrated his 60th birthday this year, will be at both sessions.
The first 50 people at each event will receive a voucher for a free smoke detector, which includes free installation for residents of the City and Old Lycoming Township. Voucher-holders may arrange a time that is convenient for them to have the detector installed. Residents living outside of the City and Township may contact their local fire department for information regarding installation after receiving a voucher. Smoke detectors are the most effective early warning device available for the home. Since they were introduced to consumers in the 1970’s, they have helped to reduce the home fire death rate by one half.
The Fire Prevention Week kickoff events are co-sponsored by the Department of Health, Lycoming County Safe Kids, DCNR, Community Arts Center and Penn College of Technology, Ralph Steer of State Farm Insurance and Sovereign Bank.
Fire prevention and safety efforts improve our City's neighborhoods by making them more safe and code-compliant. In April, Mayor Mary B. Wolf created the fire prevention division, which is funded in part by Community Development Block Grant funds.
