The Pennsylvania Department of Health has recently mandated that children in grades K-3 have yearly Body Mass Index (BMI) calculations done. This new mandate, which begins in the fall of 2005, will be integrated as part of the growth-screening program conducted annually by the school nurses.  Additional grade levels will be added over the next several years.  The BMI is a calculation utilizing the child’s height, weight, age, and gender. The calculation, which is a screening tool, is used as a guideline to assist health care providers in identifying children who may be underweight, overweight, or at risk for overweight.
Several factors can influence a child’s BMI calculation. Some of these include participation in sports, pubertal status, and family history. Each child’s BMI calculation will be mailed home to the parents. The child’s health care provider is the best person to evaluate whether or not the measurements/calculations are within a healthy range  Being either underweight or overweight can put a child at risk for certain health problems. A child who is underweight has an increased risk for heart problems, loss of bone mass, and anemia. A child who is overweight has an increased risk for cardiovascular problems, diabetes, depression, and certain cancers. It is important to emphasize that only the child’s health care provider can determine if the student is at risk for health problems. If you have any questions, please call the school nurse at your child’s school.
