THE 2004 MISS JUNETEENTH EDUCATIONAL PAGEANT
Juneteenth marks the end of legalized slavery in America. It is America’s oldest African American celebration and in its honor; Williamsport will host the 2nd Annual Miss Juneteenth Educational Pageant on Friday, May 20, 2004, 6:00 PM at Williamsport High School.
The Miss Juneteenth Educational Pageant Theme is Freedom Represented with Grace. The pageant will showcase twelve contestants who will compete for the 2004 title of Miss. Juneteenth. This year’s contestants are 9th, 10th, and 11th grade girls from the Williamsport Area High School. Twice a week the contestants receive training in personal development, team building. and career exploration Each contestant participates in fund raising projects that support the production and scholarship fund. The contestants must also submit a written essay on the history of Juneteenth. Prior to the pageant, the essays are reviewed and scored by Joan Schell, English Professor at Penn College of Technology. The contestants are also given credit for establishing a basis of leadership and teamwork while providing community service. The night of the pageant each contestant will be judged on a visual display depicting research on Juneteenth, a three-minute essay and their individual talent.

Henrietta K. Hadley, Founder and Organizer of the pageant, created this program to provide young African American women in Williamsport, PA an opportunity to develop their personal growth, explore their history and participate in community service. This year coaches are on board to assist in all areas of program development. The Pageant Coaches are Tonya Anderson, drama, Terri Confair, dance and Yolanda Clark, training.
The 2004 Miss Juneteenth Educational Pageant court has been extremely busy over the past year participating in community and social events including The Williamsport Mummer’s Parade, Philadelphia Juneteenth activities and other State Activities.
Whitney Harley has been a Peer Coach during the ten-week training program as well as, Monica Charles and Melissa Mills.
The community is encouraged to support this event by attending the pageant on Friday, May 20, 2005 at 6:00 PM tickets are $10.00; youth tickets are $5.00 and can be purchased from anyone of the contestants and at the High School Ticket Office at 4:00pm. THE NIGHT OF THE SHOW.
