Williamsport Area High School
Honor Roll Revision
There has been a change in the high school’s honor roll qualification process. We will no longer be counting “honor roll points” as a factor in earning recognition for the honor roll. And, there will be a three-part division in the new honor roll, recognizing Honor Roll, High Honor Roll and Distinguished Honor Roll achievement. The new policy has no impact whatsoever on cumulative academic average calculation or class rank calculation. Those formulae remain unchanged.
Our student handbook currently states that to be eligible for the honor roll, "a student must earn a minimum of 15 honor points." Honor Roll points are accumulated based upon an assigned value for each subject (5 points for honors classes, 4 for academic classes and 3 for regular classes) in which a grade of 90 or better (85 or better for Honors courses) has been earned. In addition, all grades must be 85 or above to qualify currently for honor roll status. In calculating honor roll eligibility, physical education and health grades are not used, and carry no honor roll points. Likewise, summer school work does not carry honor roll points.
The revised policy calls for a three-part honor roll structure, which recognizes student achievement on an equal footing at every level of course undertaken. Students would attain "Honor Roll" status during a marking period by earning grades of 85 or higher in every course undertaken; "High Honor Roll" status would come to students earning grades of 90 or better in every course undertaken; "Distinguished Honor Roll" status is earned by those students with a 95 or better in every course during the marking period. The thresholds cited here are for individual course grades each marking period, and not cumulative course averages over more than one marking period. Health and physical education grades and summer school grades would continue to be excluded from honor roll calculations. However, each Health and Physical Education grade, or summer school grade, must be 85 or above to qualify a student for any level of honor roll recognition. Any grade below 85 in these areas would disqualify a student from honor roll consideration, regardless of the rest of his or her grades.
