A Message from Mrs. Metzger, Physical Education teacher at Hepburn Lycoming Elementary School:
Beginning the week of September 29, on days 1, 2, and 4 of our rotating schedule, the kindergarten students will be participating in the Stimulating Maturity through Accelerated Readiness Training (SMART kids) program. It is a progressive sensory receptor-training program, which will use six to seven physical activity centers in the gym. The children will spend about 20 minutes circulating through the activities. This will occur in the morning between arrival time and opening exercises at 9:00am.
Fifth grade bus buddies will see that the children get in the school and to the gym safely. Parents who drive their child may drop them off at the font door after 8:35am. It would be helpful if the children had their sneakers on.
Balancing, spinning, jumping, tossing, catching, and bouncing are some of the motor skills we will be emphasizing. Research has shown that participation in physical activities has improved learning in the classroom.
As I start my teaching day elsewhere on days 3 and 5, I will not be able to run the SMART kids on these days. The calendar days we will be running this, through the first semester, include:
Sept. 29
Oct. 1, 3, 6, 8, 13, 14, 16, 20, 21, 23, 27, 28, 30
Nov. 3, 4, 10, 12, 13, 17, 19, 20, 24
Dec. 2, 3, 5, 9, 10, 12, 16, 17, 19
Jan. 5, 7, 9, 12, 14, 16, 20, 22, 26, 27, 29
Further dates will be available in January. Thanks from Mrs. Metzger for your cooperation in this new physical education adventure!
