You already know that there are a number of resources available on this website to help you improve your scores on the PSSA’s, and to become familiar with these assessments. But there are resources here in school to help you study for these all-important district tests. Your English and Mathematics teachers are your first line of assistance. They have extra materials that can help you work toward success on these local assessments. The important thing is that you understand the need to spend the next several weeks getting help in the areas you aren’t yet proficient in. Below are some resources available at the high school that you should really take advantage of as you prepare for the District Local Assessments.
If you want to brush up on your reading and writing skills for the DLA’s, you will need to bring a floppy disk to the library and access the Skills Bank software on the library computers. That software will be found either on the desktop or under the Apple menu. If you’re having trouble finding or using this software, just ask the librarian for assistance. From there, the program is self-explanatory. If you do not have a floppy disk, they are available for purchase in the library for $1 per disk.
If you need help in mathematics, the Understanding Math series is available to all students in the computer room just off the hub area of the high school, room F-101. This software will help students prepare for the district local assessments as well as the actual PSSA’s. The software includes instruction and practice problems in Fractions, Integers, Exponents, Algebra, Equations, Graphing, Percentages, probability and Geometry. All of the high school math teachers are familiar with this material and are more than willing to offer advice regarding which topics students should focus on. The computer room aide will help students get started on the programs. A floppy disk is not needed for these programs.
Passing the District Local Assessments is absolutely essential as the final step for many of you to receive a Williamsport Area High School diploma. Over the next month or so, you must review this material, and put it together with what you already know from four years of your regular classes. Passing the District Local Assessments is a great opportunity to show yourself what you can do when you have to, and that you can set a goal and meet it. The entire high school staff stands ready to help you achieve that goal, but you must put in the work and study necessary to make it a reality.
