Jazz Day Festival

Williamsport students from Curtin, Roosevelt, Lycoming Valley, and WAHS will participate in an all day Jazz Day Festival 2003 today, Tuesday, April 15, 2003.  The clinic is entitled, Rhythm for a Reason: the workings of a rhythm section.” The high school Jazz band students enjoy a day of rehearsing and performing, but they will do so among stellar company. Pianist, composer, arranger and clinician Steve Rudolph and Jazz recording artist Steve Meashey will also be in attendance.  Students will participate in clinics during the day and will perform for the public this evening at the WAHS.  The Jazz Concert is set to begin at 7:00pm this evening at the Williamsport Area High School.

Internationally renowned pianist Steve Rudolph leads acoustic jazz ensembles that present innovative performances of modern jazz.  Dynamic interpretations of his acclaimed compositions bring new meaning to the jazz tradition.  He has captivated listeners around the world with his piano artistry and insightful commentary.

Winner of the 1999 Jazziz Magazine - Seven Springs Jazz Festival Piano Competition, he has appeared in concert with master drummer Louie Bellson, Grammy winner Mark Murphy, Al Grey, John Blake, Buddy Tate, Clark Terry, Paquito D’Rivera, Herb Ellis, Buddy DeFranco, Terry Gibbs, and countless other jazz greats.  Five European tours, three appearances as soloist with the Harrisburg Symphony, soloist with Miami’s New World Symphony and receiving Pennsylvania’s Council on the Arts Jazz Fellowship in 1995 and 2001 highlight his career.  Steve was presented as an “Emerging Artist” at the Jazz Times Convention in New York City in 1998.  Voted “Best Musician” in the Harrisburg Magazine “Best of Central PA Poll” five years in a row, he recently received the 2002 Harrisburg Arts Award for his artistry and service to the community.

15 years ago, Steve Meashey was a promising, up and coming bassist from Lebanon, Pa. He has had many opportunities for artistic and career advancement in Central PA, Philadelphia and New York City with great musicians including John Campbell, Johnny Coles, John Swanna, Steve Giordano and Steve Rudolph to name a few.

Over the past 23 years Steve has also enjoyed being able to make his living playing and teaching bass, trombone and baritone horn in Central PA and Philly where he has had the privilege of interacting musically with Brazilian vocalist Kenia, J. D. Walter, Joe Farrel, Bob Meashey, Kelly Meashey, Bill Goodwin, Joe Hunt and many more. Steve has also been involved in a great deal of recording over the last 10 years, including CDs with The For Peace Quartet, Steve Giordano Quartet, Dave Wilson Quartet and Curt Sipe Quartet, and is excited to have recorded recently with drummer Joe Hunt and Steve Rudolph.
