Recognition: |
Section 1611 of the PA Public School Code of 1949, which establishes the authority to confer academic degrees with the Board of Education, was amended on June 25, 2001. This amendment allows the Board of Education to establish a program to be known as “Operation Recognition” to grant high school diplomas to World War II veterans who meet certain criteria.
To implement Operation Recognition, the Student Services office will receive applications for diplomas through November 12, 2001. Eligible veterans will be invited to the November 20, 2001, board meeting for public recognition and receipt of their high school diplomas. Veterans that miss this first round of presentations may apply at any time and will be recognized at a public board meeting following receipt of their application.
Eligibility Requirements:
1. Must be an honorably discharged World War II veteran.
2. Must have served in the United States military between September 16, 1940, and December 31, 1946.
3. Must have attended a local high school between 1937 and 1946.
4. Would have been a member of a graduation class from 1941 through 1950, but did not graduate due to entry in military service.
Application Process:
1. Veterans must complete an application form and send it to the Student Services office. A family member of a deceased veteran may make application for a posthumous award.
2. The Director of Student Services will review applications, make recommendations to the Board for approval, and invite the veterans (or the requesting family member) to a public board meeting, at which time they will be presented with their diploma.
