The Williamsport Area School District's philosophy has always been to maximize participation through offering a variety of programs to the student body. Williamsport has quality coaches who operate with the school district's mission always in mind: "To encourage students' participation, further development of sportsmanship and fair play." The value of an athletic program cannot be measured in terms of wins and losses. A beneficial athletic program is one that provides the athletes the opportunity to experience personal growth and development, both physically and mentally. Athletic programs allow athletes to learn to accept personal responsibility for success and failure, and to recognize the limitations and strengths of both. Eligibility of Student Athletes A student who participates in interscholastic athletics in the Williamsport Area School District must adhere to the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) eligibility rules. There are academic and curriculum requirements as well as age and attendance guidelines that must be satisfied in order for a student athlete to be eligible to participate. The term student athlete definitely applies to the Williamsport Area School District, where student athletes are required to maintain academic standards in order to be eligible. The faculty conducts weekly eligibility checks on all student athletes. School Nickname and Colors Williamsport Area High School's nickname "Millionaires" and the school logo of a top hat, cane gloves, and carnation are highly unusual, recalling the 1800's when Williamsport, a major logging center had more millionaire lumber barons living on its historic "millionaires' row" than lived on any comparable street in the nation. The school colors are cherry and white. Each of the three Middle School athletic programs has its own school colors and nicknames. Athletic Program Participation in athletics is a privilege, not a right, afforded to those individuals who possess the ability, attitude, disposition, cooperative spirit and desire to represent their school and community. Athletic programs require special standards and expectations in the area of academics, citizenship, training, rules and sportsmanship. There are a wide variety of instances where the athlete's behavior is expected to surpass the norm in the classroom and in the community. Research confirms that there is a direct correlation between success in later life and participation in co-curricular activities, such as interscholastic athletics. Statistics also show that students who participate in activities programs tend to have higher grade point averages, better attendance records, lower drop out rates and fewer discipline problems. Participation Fee In order to participate in interscholastic athletics in the Williamsport Area School District, every student-athlete must pay an athletic participation fee of $40.00 which is applied to the general athletic budget to help with the costs of uniforms, equipment, transportation, and other general supplies. This annual fee entitles a student to participate in an athletic program during all three seasons. Search | Contact Us | Home | Sitemap Copyright © 2002 Williamsport Area School District. All
