Safe and Drug Free Schools and Communities

Parent Participation
Parents are represented on SDFSC Council and are part of the decision making process.  They will report to the parent organizations in the various buildings participating in the program.  In addition, parents in the community will be given an opportunity to provide input into the selection, implementation and evaluation of the programs through the district's website.  Parents interested in participating on the SDFSC Council in the future will be given an opportunity to join the council through the SDFSC section of the website.  Anybody who would like to join, please contact us.

Public Reporting Method
An article will be written and published in the district newsletter describing the prevention/intervention programs and activities of the prevention program.  The Board of Education will be informed at a public meeting at the end of the semester and at the end of the school year.  All Board of Education meetings are televised on local cable.  At the end of the school year, another article will be published.

Student Assistant Program
The district's Student Assistant Program (SAP) teams have done very well identifying problems.  The number of referrals by teachers, parents, students and student self-referrals indicate trust in the programs. It is the intent of the district's plan to continue with peer mediation in all schools along with the PATHS classroom program.  In addition, the district is piloting an elementary alternative program designed to modify behaviors and return students successfully to the regular classroom.

During the summer, the district is providing teachers and administrators a week of training in the APL program designed to improve classroom discipline and promote a positive atmosphere in the classroom and school building.

Other programs throughout the district focus on the drug and alcohol problems.  Health units in grades 9-12 incorporate parts of the "Here's Looking at You 2000."  The three middle schools are involved in Project STAR and "Get Real About Tobacco."  In addition to PATHS, the elementary schools are using DARE
