Welcome to Mrs. Gibson's Website
This year in fifth grade your child will learn new ideas as well as reviewing previously learned skills and strategies. Presently in Mathematics we are continuing to use the Everyday Math Curriculum as well as learning Problem Solving Strategies. Students are also focusing on Multiplication and Division Facts zero to nine. It is important that your child has quick recall of multiplication facts
and division facts. Please spend time at home practicing with
flashcards. Study Links and Skills Link pages will be assigned for homework. Refer to your Family Letters and the Student Reference Book for assistance with the homework.
Our Language Arts Curriculum includes Reading, Writing, and Word Study. As a part of Independent Reading your child has been given an AR Goal to meet each marking period. To attain this goal your child should be reading 30 minutes or longer each evening at home. During Guided Reading your child will write letters to me about the book. Ideas for writing letters are focused on the Reading Strategies: Inferring, Main Idea, Summarizing, Synthesizing, Analyzing, Critiquing, Making Connections, and Predicting. Ask your child what he/she ia thinking Before Reading, During Reading, and After Reading. This will enhance comprehension strategies. In other words, have a conversation about the book that is being read.
Please sign your child's agenda book each night. You then have the opportunity to check the homework that has been assigned. It is important that your child has the homework completed to review during class time. When it is late, your child misses the opportunity to ask questions and participate in the discussion. Homework that is left at homei or not finished will be completed during recess time.
