Schools across WASD will use the weeks of June 1 and June 8 for families to pick up personal items and drop off district-owned property, specifically technology devices used for distance learning.

WAHS plans to distribute caps and gowns to members of its Class of 2020 the week of May 26. Distribution will be handled alphabetically by students’ last name from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Image for 'Hour of Code,' Title 1 Nights Showcase Innovative Educational Practices
Lycoming Valley and Curtin Intermediate schools hosted a combined "Hour of Code" and Title 1 at each of their locations on Jan. 28 and Feb. 5, respectively. The events celebrated not only literacy, but also provided an opportunity for families to experience all the innovative ways students are learning in the classroom.

WASD learned last week through State Sen. Gene Yaw’s office that it is among other local school districts to receive a $35,000 PAsmart grant. Funds from the grant will be used to implement a new AP computer science course in 2020-2021.

WAHS junior Lydia Smith has claimed a world championship title. Smith competed in the 2019 Pontevedra ITU Aquathlon World Championships, winning the competition over other female athletes in the 16-19 age group in Pontevedra, Spain, on May 2.

A group WAHS students ranked among the top three at the 33rd annual Envirothon held recently at the Consolidated Sportsmen of Lycoming County along Route 87. Of the 21 contending teams, the WAHS group took second place for Lycoming County and third place overall.

Mr. Brandon Coleman was recently named Supervisor of Pupil Transportation and School Safety at WASD. Coleman, who begins April 1, comes to WASD from Keystone Central School District, where he’s held the position of the district’s supervisor of police and transportation since 2009.

Author and youth advocate Rodney Walker returned to WAHS to work with about 70 students who have been through adverse experiences. He led students through a workshop called "Wounds You Cannot See," offering them strategies on how to work toward healing and positive growth.

WAHS hosted its second Career Fair on March 14 during which 55 business, organizations, agencies, colleges and universities, and military branches were present. Students were able to interact with those from many industries and explore the post-secondary opportunities available to them.

All eight WASD Odyssey of the Mind teams that competed at the Regional Tournament in Berwick on Saturday are headed to the State Finals. Contending teams from WASD represented Cochran Primary School, Curtin Intermediate School, WAMS and WAHS.

WAHS sophomore Cecilia Fink recently donated $10,500 to support two local causes: the Livestrong program at the YMCA and 6-year-old Declan Bower, who is battling leukemia. This is Fink’s fifth year supporting local programs and individuals in need through her charity, Be You Boldly.

Thanks to the generosity of River Valley Regional YMCA and its Executive Director Sonja Davy, some students in need will receive gifts this holiday season.
